Chinese cities are experiencing dramatic institutional transformations and spatial restructuring. In particular, the institutional changes in both the housing andlabour force sectors had profound consequences to the spatial structure and consequently the commuting patterns. This study tries to reveal the relationship between jobs- housing relationship and commute. Using household survey datasets collected in Guangzhou in 2001, 2005, and 2010, the jobs-housing balance measurements in the excess commuting literature are estimated, which show that spatial separation between jobs and housing increases since the middle 1990s.
