The ongoing housing reform in Chinese cities have resulted significant housing inequality and residential segregation in a previously homogeneous society. This paper aims to study the socio-spatial impact of housing reform and rising mobility by focusing on housing inequality and its spatial manifestation. Using the 2000 census data for Wuhan, we find there is significant inequality in housing consumption and housing access between groups defined by hukou status and mobility. There is also a moderate degree of residential segregation and isolation between them. Multivariate analyses demonstrate a dual mechanism in housing inequality with both markets and socialist legacy operating simultaneously.
