Research on Domestic and International Housing Market Experiences

Compiled by Zhao Lixia, Liu Zhi, and [USA] Bertrand Renaud

Peking University Press, 2023

Introduction

In recent times, the rapid expansion of China's housing market has posed challenges for policymakers, planners, businesspeople, and residents. Today, housing for China's middle-income class is driven by consumer choice, and the housing policy issues in major Chinese cities are increasingly similar to those in other global housing markets. Against the backdrop of high housing prices, many middle- and low-income families face numerous disadvantages in terms of housing quality and location.

This book explores the impact of changes in the housing market on ordinary people, homeowners, and developers. The authors of each paper analyzed the impact of these changes on economic and social development.

Although focusing on China, the authors of this book also explore the many challenges faced by Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Nordic countries, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States in designing specific policies. Potential readers of this book can include housing policymakers as well as experts and scholars who are currently studying and focusing on the social and political impacts of China's housing market.

The English edition of this book, titled International Housing Market Experience and Implications for China, was published by Routledge in 2019. The Chinese edition was translated and published by the Center for Urban Development and Land Policy at the Lincoln Institute, Peking University.
