On July10, 2023, the summer academic exchange workshop "Nature-Protecting Policies, Methods, and Practices in the Process of Urbanization" opened at the Turen Society of Wangshan Commune, Huangshan City. This workshop was organized by the Center for Urban Development and Land Policy at Peking University-Lincoln Institute (Peking University-Lincoln Center), with support from The Nature Conservancy, the Landscape Conservation Center, Turen Design, and the Institute for Sustainable Global Environment. The workshop attracted 42 young scholars from universities, research institutions, international organizations, and related enterprises, aiming to disseminate theoretical knowledge and practical experience in ecological protection and promote exchange between academia and industry.
On the morning of the 10th, the workshop opening ceremony was hosted by Director Liu Zhi of the Peking University-Lincoln Center, who delivered a welcome speech. Director Liu Zhi introduced the background of this workshop, as well as the organizers and co-organizers and instructors. In a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, workshop members introduced themselves and deepened their understanding of each other.
After the opening ceremony, Professor Lin Jiabin, a researcher at the Social and Cultural Research Department of the Development Research Center of the State Council, gave a lecture titled "The Evolution and Effects of China's Ecological Environment Protection Policies," providing participants with a panoramic view of the country's ecological environment policy history and current situation. Mr. Lin first thoroughly reviewed the key ecological environment policy nodes, policy background, and policy content since the founding of China, then analyzed the effectiveness of China's ecological environment policies with detailed data. At the end of the lecture, Professor Lin engaged in discussions with the participants on the problems and challenges facing China's ecological environment sector, as well as hot topics in the field.
On the afternoon of the 10th, Deputy Director Bai Yunwen from the Beijing Green Finance and Sustainable Development Research Institute gave a lecture titled "Green Finance and Biodiversity Conservation." Teacher Bai first introduced the concept, importance, and international consensus, consensus, and challenges of biodiversity conservation. Next, Professor Bai summarized the characteristics and current conservation status of biodiversity in China, and introduced the approach and specific operational framework of green finance for biodiversity conservation based on domestic and international research findings. Mr. Bai also vividly introduced China's innovations and successful cases in supporting biodiversity conservation through green finance.
This workshop will last five days and will include two parts: keynote lectures and field research. Lecture topics included "The Evolution and Effects of China's Ecological and Environmental Protection Policies," "Application of Green Finance in Nature Conservation," "International Protected Area Experience," "Methods and Tools in Natural Resource Policy—Ecological Resource Accounting and Protected Easements," "Territorial Space Optimization and Ecological Environment Protection in the Yangtze River Economic Belt," "Exploration and Practice of Public Welfare Protected Areas in China," "Nature Conservation and Community Co-construction in Western China—A Case Study of Sanjiangyuan," and "Other Effective Regional Protection Measures—OECMs." ”。 The field research aims to learn the specific role of nature-based solutions in the revitalization of ancient villages; The components and landscape systems of Huizhou's water culture landscape; Huizhou water security pattern and other water culture-related knowledge.The workshop aims to deepen members' understanding of nature conservation by combining theory and practice, and also hopes that after leaving this academic exchange workshop and returning to work, members will spread knowledge and apply methods in practice.
