Previously, China's urbanization had entered a period of stable development, with urban development shifting from incremental expansion to improving quality through existing stock. The 2025 Central Urban Work Conference clearly proposed using urban renewal as a key driver to promote urban structure optimization and connotative development. The "15th Five-Year Plan" also lists regional coordinated development as a key task.


Against this backdrop, the Peking University-Lincoln Center will be held at Peking University from July 13 to 16, 2026"Modern Urban Systems and Urban Renewal" Workshop. Building on the 2022 "Urban Renewal Theory and Practice" workshop, this session will focus on coordinated development of urban agglomerations and metropolitan areas, exploring how urban renewal can better support regional coordinated development and assist in optimizing urban structure and coordinated regional development.

Cao Guangzhong

Cao Guangzhong is a professor at the School of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, a distinguished professor of textbook liberalization, and director of the Future Urban Research Center at Peking University. Mainly engaged in research on urban geography and urban-rural planning, population migration, and urbanization. He also serves as a council member of the Chinese Geographical Society and deputy director of the Human Geography Committee, deputy director of the Regional Planning and Urban Economy Committee of the China Urban Planning Society, and a member of the Rural Housing and Village Construction Committee of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.


He Canfei, former Dean of the School of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University, Boya Distinguished Professor at Peking University, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2014), and Jiangjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education (2016). He also serves as Director of the Teaching Steering Committee for Geographical Sciences at the Ministry of Education and as a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Natural Resources. His research focus is economic geography, covering areas such as international trade economics, international investment geography, industrial economics, environmental economics, evolutionary economics, as well as urban and regional development.

Li Xun

Li Xun, Director of the China Institute of Regional Coordinated Development and Rural Construction at Sun Yat-sen University, Professor at the School of Geographic Science and Planning, and Doctoral Supervisor at Sun Yat-sen University; Deputy Director of the Rural Housing and Village Construction Professional Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development's Science and Technology Committee, and member of the Professional Committee for Historical and Cultural Protection and Inheritance. He has long been engaged in research and practice in rural urbanization, village planning, rural construction, and urban-rural community governance.


Shi Minjun is a Qiushi Distinguished Professor at Zhejiang University, Director of the Department of Urban Development and Management at the School of Public Administration, Director of the Xiong'an Development Center at Zhejiang University, Director of the Urban Development and Low-Carbon Strategy Research Center at Zhejiang University, and Director of the Collaborative Innovation Center for Low-Carbon Cities at Zhejiang University. He also serves as Vice Chairman of the Chinese Regional Science Society, Director of the Spatial Analysis Professional Committee, Deputy Director of the New Economic Geography Professional Committee, and Executive Director of the Chinese Society of Natural Resources. His main research areas are regional economy, green development, and environmental resource management.

Shi Xiaodong, Senior Engineer. Member of the Party Leadership Group of the Beijing Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Commission, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Beijing Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, Chief Planner (concurrently) of the Beijing Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Commission, and Director of the Science and Technology Committee of the Municipal Planning Institute. Deputy Director of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Capital Regional Spatial Planning Research, Executive Director of the China Urban Planning Society. As the chief technical officer, he has presided over and organized the implementation of major plans related to the Party and the country, such as the new Beijing master plan and the control plan for the capital's core functional area; Recipient of titles such as National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent, National Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Expert, State Council Special Allowance Expert, and Outstanding Worker of the China Urban Planning Society; Chief expert of the High-Level Scientific and Technological Innovation Talent Engineering Science and Technology Innovation Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and expert of the Expert Committee on Living Environment Construction of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.


Tian Li is a tenured professor in the Department of Urban Planning at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, and director of the Land Use and Housing Policy Research Center. Director of the Innovation Center for Smart Human Living Environment and Spatial Planning Governance at the Ministry of Natural Resources. Distinguished Professor of Jiangxi Scholars by the Ministry of Education. Research areas include land ownership and spatial governance, urban renewal and planning design, AI-empowered urban governance, and policy research.

Admission targets

Researchers from domestic universities and research institutions, as well as practitioners in related fields. Generally, a doctoral or master's degree is required, and outstanding candidates may have relaxed academic requirements. A small number of slots are allocated to senior doctoral students engaged in research in related fields.
