From the Ground Up: How Land Trusts and Conservancies Are Providing Solutions to Climate Change

By James N. Levitt and Chandni Navalkha
From the Ground Up: How Land Trusts and Conservancies Are Providing Solutions to Climate Change is the latest Policy Focus Report released by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. It documents how land conservation organizations develop and implement innovative nature-based solutions to help communities adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change on human societies and biodiversity. The report showcases innovative case studies from Australia, China, Germany and the United States, as well as collaborative projects across Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East. These cases illustrate the rapid, comprehensive actions carried out by land conservation groups in fields including land preservation, freshwater source protection, response to heavy rainfall and sea level rise, ecosystem balance maintenance, rational site selection for renewable energy projects, and carbon sink enhancement.
This report is co-authored by James N. Levitt, an international expert and educator in land conservation, and Chandni Navalkha, a specialist in sustainable land and water resource management. Drawing on successful real-world cases, the report offers the following guidance for public and private stakeholders to unlock the full potential of civic organizations in delivering nature-based climate solutions:
  1. Empower creative, ambitious civic initiatives with broad geographical scope and large-scale coverage.

  2. Invest in initiatives featuring clear strategic frameworks and measurable outcomes.

  3. Pursue broad cross-border and cross-sector collaborative partnerships.

  4. Share cutting-edge scientific research, technological tools and innovative financial engineering approaches.

  5. Support resilient, adaptable, replicable long-term conservation initiatives.
