The year 2021 was a particularly important year in China's modernization process. Facing the severe and complex international situation, the arduous and heavy tasks of domestic reform, development, and stability, especially the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the resilience and innovation capacity of Chinese cities face a major test, and the economic development of Chinese cities also requires profound transformation. At the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the first year of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the start of the new journey of building a modern socialist country, and the intersection of the "Two Centenary Goals," high-quality urban development and coordinated regional development have put forward new requirements for research on China's urban economy.
On October 29, 2020, the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee passed the "Recommendations of the CPC Central Committee on Formulating the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Goals for 2035," proposing to "improve the system and mechanisms for regional coordinated development, build a territorial spatial layout and support system for high-quality development," "lead and create new demand through innovation-driven and high-quality supply," and "reasonably determine urban scale, population density, and spatial structure to promote coordinated development of large, medium, and small cities and small towns." Against this backdrop, the 4th China Urban Economists Forum is tentatively scheduled to be held at Peking University on July 17–18, 2021. This forum was jointly initiated in 2017 by the Institute of Financial Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the School of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University, the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, the School of Economics at Nankai University, the Antai School of Economics and Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Economic Research Magazine. Each year, the initiators take turns hosting the forum, aiming to build a high-level academic exchange and cooperation platform for experts and scholars in the field of urban economics, and to become an annual academic event in this field.
The 4th China Urban Economists Forum was jointly organized by the Economic Research Magazine, the School of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University, and the Urban Development and Land Policy Research Center of Peking University-Lincoln Institute.
