Repost | Announcement for the 11th Qian Xuesen Urbanology Award: Future Communities Boost Intensive Land Use

"Labor is the father of wealth, and land is the mother of wealth." Promoting economical and intensive land use and raising the efficiency of urban land utilization are inevitable choices for transforming the economic development model and achieving high-quality economic growth. Zhejiang Province is currently advancing the construction of future communities, aiming to explore efficient utilization of urban spatial resources and pursue innovative practices for compound land use.
In 2021, the Hangzhou International Urbanology Research Center (Zhejiang Urban Governance Research Center) jointly organizes the call for entries for the 11th Qian Xuesen Urbanology Award in collaboration with the Institute of Land and National Development of Zhejiang University, the Editorial Department of China Land Science, the China Urban Planning Association, the Peking University–Lincoln Institute Center for Urban Development and Land Policy, and the Zhejiang Urban Planning Society. The detailed announcement is as follows:

1. Theme for Submission

Intensive and Economical Urban Land Use and the Construction & Operation of Future Communities

2. Submission Channels

Entries can be submitted in three ways: individual voluntary submission, recommendation by experts or academic societies, and recommendation by journals or publishing houses.

3. Submission Requirements

3.1 Plans and Reports

Entries shall be problem-oriented and practice-focused. Eligible works include, but are not limited to, technical reports on intensive and economical urban land use, planning and renovation plans for new urban districts and old urban areas, development plans for urban spaces, construction and operation plans for future communities, as well as plans for industry-city integration and project operation. Entries from both institutions and individuals are accepted with no quantity limit. For implemented plans and schemes, relevant supporting case materials may be attached.

3.2 Papers and Monographs

Published or unpublished papers, research reports, monographs and translations are all acceptable. Translations must be submitted with written consent from the original authors. All entries shall be closely aligned with the theme, featuring distinct viewpoints, original insights, rigorous arguments and solid evidence, and possess both theoretical and practical value.
  • The main text of papers and research reports shall range from 8,000 to 15,000 words.

  • For monographs and translated works, two printed copies shall be delivered, together with a summary of 8,000 to 15,000 words.

  • All entries must be accompanied by Chinese and English abstracts of around 300 words respectively, as well as author information.

  • Each participant may submit a maximum of two entries. For translated works, the name and brief introduction of the original author shall be specified. The author list shall be subject to the information provided upon submission.

3.3 Submission Deadline and Formalities

The submission deadline is June 30, 2021. All entries shall comply with the Format Specifications for Outstanding Works of the 11th Qian Xuesen Urbanology Award, and can be submitted by post or email.
Applicants are required to download and fill out the Authorization Letter for Works of the 11th Qian Xuesen Urbanology Award, sign it, and send it to the organizing committee via fax or post.

4. Awards

  • Qian Xuesen Urbanology Award: 1 winner, with a cash prize of 200,000 RMB.

  • Qian Xuesen Urbanology Nomination Award: 10 winners, each receiving a cash prize of 20,000 RMB.

  • Excellent Award: Multiple recipients.

Full texts or excerpts of award-winning works will be published in Urbanology Research. The award ceremony will be held during the 2021 China Urbanology Annual Conference.
In addition, ideas and cases concerning the construction, operation and architectural design of future communities are eligible for the West Lake Urbanology Award. Application forms can be downloaded via the official new media platforms of What to Do with Cities, including WeChat, Weibo and the official website (http://www.urbanchina.org). Entries shall be submitted by email.
