Symbiosis — Incentive Relationships in Conservation Management

Moderator:
Anton Gazenbeek, Member of the Steering Committee, International Land Conservation Network (ILCN)
Guest Speakers:
Natasha Wilson, Deputy Director, South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)
Mel Galbraith, Senior Lecturer, Unitec Institute of Technology, New Zealand

This webinar delves into novel incentive relationships in land restoration and management, and how they can be replicated elsewhere. Community trusts in South Africa integrate rural development with biodiversity management; citizen volunteers in New Zealand have made significant efforts in large-scale land and biodiversity restoration; and municipalities in the Netherlands have established partnerships with local landowners and businesses. The guest speakers discuss the merits of these partnerships, the added value they bring to landowners, and their impact on nature conservation. The core focus is on how to build mutually beneficial partnerships, establish a shared conservation vision, identify the motivations for partners to join, and sustain the collaboration.

Against the backdrop of climate change, maintaining the quality and quantity of water for humans and wildlife is becoming increasingly difficult due to various factors. These factors include watershed fragmentation, pollution, the proliferation of invasive species, and water rights conflicts. To address these challenges, water funds and other institutions dedicated to water conservation and restoration are striving to explore methods to protect areas and natural processes that provide freshwater supply, flood control, wildlife habitat, and other water security functions. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the key projects led by the experts across North America, South America, Europe, and Australia.
