Call for Papers

The 10th International Workshop on Regional, Urban, and Spatial Economics in China

July 21-22, 2023, Beijing, China



College of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University, and Peking University-Lincoln Institute Center for Urban Development and Land Policy, together with Growth and change, Journal of Regional Science and Spatial Economic Analysis are pleased to announce that we are organizing the 10th International Workshop on Regional, Urban and Spatial Economics in China at Peking University, Beijing, China during July 21-22, 2023.


Paper Submission and Registration

Following the tradition of previous highly successful workshops to date, we aim to continue to attract high-quality research output, further increase the academic visibility of regional, urban, and spatial issues in the world and particularly in China, and reinforce the research network for top level China-focused scholars from across the globe. We welcome submissions on the following themes:

· Agglomeration and new economic geography

· Environment, energy, and sustainable development

· Firm and household location decisions

· Housing issues: supply, demand, prices, affordability, and policies

· Land use and land-use policy

· Regional growth and development

· Transportation: its management and socio-economic impacts

· Urban governance and its optimization, including  community governance

· Urban growth, dynamics, and transformation

· Urban network and spatial interdependencies

· Urban and regional policy evaluation

· Urbanization and migration

· Any other topics on regional, urban and spatial issues in China


For those who are interested in presenting a paper in the workshop, please submit in English a draft paper or an extended abstract (roughly 200-500 words, identifying the research question clearly and presenting basic results) through email to ruse2023@163.com, mentioning “paper submission for RUSE2023” in the subject headline of the email. For the convenience of organization, please include your detailed contact information (name, affiliation, phone number, as well as email address) in your submission.

There is no registration fee for attending the conference. Participants only need to pay their own cost of accommodation and transportation.

Editors or editorial board members from Journal of Regional Science, Growth and Change, Economic Geography, and Spatial Economic Analysis will attend the workshop. They welcome submissions that fit these journals.


Submission Deadline

· The submission deadline is May 15, 2023.

· Notification of acceptance will be sent out by June 1, 2023.

· A complete paper in English is due on July 1, 2023.

The College of Urban and Environmental Sciences (CUES), started from the establishment of the Department of Geology and Geography in 1952, is one of the leading institutions in China for teaching and research on urban and environmental issues. Currently, CUES has five departments, including the Department of Environmental Science, Department of Ecology, Department of Resource and Environmental Geography, Department of Urban and Economic Geography, and Department of Urban and Regional Planning, and two centers, including the Center for Historical Geography and the Center for Architecture. The CUES offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs in various disciplines related to urban and environmental studies. One of the main research areas of the CUES is regional, urban and spatial economics. This field focuses on analyzing the spatial distribution of economic activities, resources, population, infrastructure and environment across different regions and cities. Some of the topics that researchers at the CUES explore include regional development strategies, urbanization patterns, spatial inequality, land use planning, urban governance, transportation systems, housing markets, environmental quality and public services. The CUES aims to provide academic insights and policy recommendations for addressing the challenges and opportunities facing China’s urbanization and environmental transformation. It also seeks to promote international collaboration and exchange among scholars and practitioners in this field.


The Peking University-Lincoln Institute (PLC) is a joint venture between Peking University and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, a US-based think tank. The PLC was founded in 2007 as a non-profit educational and research institution that focuses on urban development and land policy issues in China. Some of the main research topics of the PLC include fiscal and tax systems, macro tax burden, tax structure, urban finance, local taxes, real estate taxes, land use planning, urbanization, housing policy, environmental policy and public services. The PLC also provides training programs, policy consultations, publications and demonstration projects for various stakeholders such as government officials, scholars, practitioners and students. The PLC aims to promote academic excellence and policy innovation in the fields of land and urban studies. It also seeks to foster international collaboration and exchange among researchers and policymakers from different countries.
